bid like you mean it.
Here's the traditional, eBay sniping-as-a-sport approach.
- Get a strong pot of coffee about 10 minutes before the auction begins.
- Point your browser to NIST to make sure you have the exact time.
- Log in to eBay. (You do have an account, don't you?)
- Visit your eBay auction and enter the amount you wish to pay, but don't click the Place Bid button!
- Open another window on your browser on the bid history for that item.
- Check your watch.
- Refresh the bid history to make sure your net connection is still active. Dialup accounts are notorious for dropping connections at exactly the wrong time for a sniper.
- Place your bid sometime between 5 to 20 seconds before the end of the auction. If it's a Sunday night around 6pm, make it more like 30 seconds. eBay has a tremendously heavy load at that time.
- Switch back to the bidding page and click the Bid Confirm button.
- Check the bid history page and see if you've been outsniped. Congratulations! You've become an eBay sniper!

bid!
You rethink your budget, and decide: I'll go for it. I want this thing. A lot. And I'm not going to let some moron beat me to it. You up your budget a bit, then BAM! Someone else steps in and outbids you. Lather, rinse, repeat. Finally you're ahead and it's only a matter of waiting out the auction. But when the auction finally closes.... you realize in horror that you are not the winner. Someone placed a bid in the closing moments of the auction. You've been sniped. eBay sniping has become the state of the art bidding method. Suddenly it's one of the best things that can happen, especially when you realize there are services like eSnipe that can do eBay sniping for you automatically at minimal cost. On eBay, snipers rule.

Now a word from our sponsor. If you drink, don't snipe. If you snipe, don't drink. Always bid responsibly. Or don't be an eBay sniper.
